Skye Barker Maa Artist's Statement
Sigh. Love. True Love. I wanted to create series of collections and stories about lust, manipulation, and deceit, but I’m a romantic and a believer and can’t seem to pull it off.
I’ll stick to what I know. Love. True Love. And Heartbreak. I’ve had all. In pre marriage loves, I’ve ripped my own heart out and handed it over willingly. In business and friendship, I’ve had it shockingly ripped out while I felt weak and watched. (Think Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. It was like that…)
I’ve loved a lot. I’m lucky. I’ve suffered heartbreak. A lot.
I’m lucky about that too, because, yay, now I create art.
Royals was inspired by so many things. Real Royals and the portraits that made them famous. Fairy Tales. I’m Beating a Dead Horse Here, but True Love. Faux Love. Lorde’s song “Royals”. Manipulation and Deceit. Trust. Mistrust. Bad Decisions and Good Decisions. (Mostly Decisions that we think are good but are bad). And most of all Love Letters and Romance.
I’m giving you my heart again. I’ve encapsulated it in these collections.
The full Royals collection is comprised of 6 segments: Medieval, Marie Antoinette, Imperial, Princess Grace, and Future (Way Far in the Future) Royals. Each segment is a unique collection and storyline. The full collection will show on two runways and be featured in a solo narrated artist exhibit.
